Mayor of Santa Coloma Signs Agreement to Introduce Local Digital Currency

The mayor of Santa Coloma, Nuria Parlon, signed the 8th of July an agreement in which the city agrees to introduce a digital currency. In the first stage of the pilot, Santa Coloma, a city close to Barcelona, will pay subsidies partly in a digital currency that for a certain period can be spent only within the city. In this way, the impact of subsidies on the local economy will increase.


The mayor stated that that other expenses will also be channelled through the system and shortly the civil servants can also choose to be paid in the digital currency.


The Santa Coloma pilot is part of the Digipay4Growth project, with pilots in Spain, Bristol and Sardinia.
